Coronavirus Melbourne: Woolworths distribution centre worker tests positive
A contractor who worked at the Woolworths distribution centre in Melbourne’s southeast has tested positive to coronavirus.
Other workers at the site in Mulgrave were notified of the positive result on Tuesday.
It’s understood the worker, who is not a Woolworths team member, was not in close contact with any other staff during their shift.
The contractor worked their last shift on July 7 and remains in isolation, but no other employees have been required to quarantine so far.
Woolworths has been conducting ongoing proactive voluntary COVID-19 testing at the site, with more than 200 team members tested on July 7 and July 9 for no positive results.
The site has remained open and continues to dispatch deliveries to stores as normal.
A Woolworths spokesman said the risk of transmission to other team members was low given the social distancing and hygiene controls already in place at the distribution centre.
“We’re informing our DC team members about the case and will provide our full support to anyone required to self-isolate in line with advice from the Department of Health and Human Services,” he said.
“We will also continue to offer proactive voluntary COVID tests to team members at the DC.
“We’ve been conducting detailed cleaning across all high-touch areas in the DC four times a day for a number of weeks.
“As an extra precautionary measure, we have completed a deep clean of all manual handling equipment and headsets.”
The Melbourne National Distribution Centre dispatches packaged grocery, health and beauty and general merchandise, not fresh produce, dairy or meat.
Workers and truck drivers at Woolworths distribution centres have been required to undergo temperature checks before entering the premises, while nurses have also been deployed to sites and stores to assist staff with any health concerns and monitor temperature checks.
